For a variety of reasons:

-For users with slow downloads either because of their ISP capping their speeds or RS free users.
-It still gives decent quality even after significantly reducing the bit rate (Yes MKV etc does similar, I just prefer realmedia)
-For people with small harddrives incapable of storing large high quality video files
-For me as I have a slow upload speed.
